My only triathlon in 2004!

This is one of two races I've done where no report of any kind exists.  Life in 2004 just didn't ever slow down enough for me to get my thoughts together in one place on this race, so it just never happened.  Thankfully this isn't something that happens very often for me, but life is life.

I remember this being a tough, long day.  I had a fair swim, a so-so bike, and then just plain ran out of legs on the run course.  I ended up sprinting at the end (I didn't want to, but pride makes a man do dumb, dumb things), and finished in 5:49.

Photos from the better half (Lynda Hennigan), and Anik Mercure:

Early morning fog greets everyone in the transition. Air temps were 49°F.

I'm in the black bucket hat, hanging out.

"Nervous? Me? Damn skippy."

A little more relaxed...

Swim entrance. Note fog on lake.

The fog is lifting!

Lynn Kapusta, Tommy Kapusta, Me.

Tommy nearly smiles. Lynn smiles. I pretend to be somewhere warm.

Lynn and Me, ready for battle.

The fog is gone. Whew! My wave gets ready to go.

Green caps at the ready.

A last thumbs-up to the wife! "Don't worry, hon' - I'm fine! I'm not tired at all!"

Still waving. Note that I'm the only one looking the wrong way. In the front row. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm still facing the wrong way.

Waiting for the start. Finally looking forwards...

Off we go! Out to the last buoy, turn around, come back.

1.2 miles later, the swim finish. I'm reaching for my wetsuit leash.

Got the suit partially off, now I'm looking for the boss.

Lynn Kapusta heads for the road (blue jersey).

Lynn gets ready to go. Note vintage Spinergies!

Anik snapped this of me at mile 2. I did pass the girl in the red legally!

Long shot, but that's me on the road back into town, around mile 30. The skies, the scenery? That's Tupper.

A little later on at Mile 40. It was a gorgeous day by now!

Cheers! Having a quick snack leaving T2.

Lynn Kapusta leaves T2 and heads out on the run.

I did not WANT to sprint. The other guy made me.

It hurt. I think it hurt me more than he. By the way, he won by a 1/2 step.

Lynn Kapusta heads for home.

Go, Lynn, go!

St. Lynda and I, post-race. Note approaching Thunderstorm in background. Typical Upstate weather for June; it poured 10 minutes later.
