That's me, 1993. |
On the road to Perpignan, with the 20KM to go marker on the stage just ahead. The helmet - the state of the art Specialized Air Force II; funny how it looks like a big beer cooler now. |
The breakaway of Pascal Lino and, um, shoot. |
The two leaders come into the final 200 meters - Lino would win in the photo finish. |
The main field - Perpginan. |
Here comes the chase, 12 minutes later. In the middle in the French National Championship Jersey is none other than Dudu - Jacky Durand. |
Clouds over the Port D'Envalira - Andorra. |
This is from the summit of the Port D'Envalira (2407 meters), at the border of France and Andorra. I'd spent 45 minutes climbing in the fog, only to come out into the sunshine at the summit. It was a perfect day at 7,896 feet! |
Leading Group - Port D'Envalira. |
This is the Yellow Jersey group at the summit: Gerard Rue leads Indurain, with Tony Rominger, Alvaro Mejia, and the rest towards the final bend. |
Lead Group - Port D'Envalira. |
A second later, and even from my hilltop perch you can really see who's here: Indurain, Rominger, Mejia, Roche, Jaskula, Bugno, Rincon, Riis(!), and I'm sure Hampsten is back there somewhere. |
Laurent Jalabert - Port D'Envalira. |
I made my way down to the roadside in time to catch Jaja coming over about 2 minutes behind the lead. I love how everyone is pulling for him as he takes the last bend towards the top. |
Pla D'Adet - Pyrenees. |
This is at the base of the Pla D'Adet climb - Stage 15 that year. Jon Unzaga leads Rominger, Indurain, Jaskula, Roche, and I think the Festina jersey at the edge of the frame is Virenque? |
Pla D'Adet - Pyrenees. |
A zoom-in of the previous shot. Jon Unzaga always had that face; he rode himself into the ground to try and get Rominger away every stage...but Indurain never blinked. |
Pla D'Adet - Chase Group. |
Long before that guy knocked over Giuseppe Guerini at L'Alpe D'Huez (1999), I stood in the middle of the road and watched the chase group coming at me. I took this shot, dove for the side, and made sure I didn't mess with anyone. |
Pla D'Adet - Chase Group |
Here's the rest of the first chase group. See that ski station way off in the distance, way up there? That's the finish, still 11KM away. |
Pla D'Adet - Chase Group |
The same group, a few seconds later. I think thats Udo Bolts in the Telekom jersey, grinding away. |
Pla D'Adet - GAN rider. |
Can anyone ID him? He was just dropped from the Indurain Yellow Jersey group, with just the final climb left to go. |
Gianni Bugno - Pla D'Adet |
Poor Bugno, dropped from the lead. Broke my heart to see Le Maillot Arc en Ciel fighting in no-man's land. |
Pla D'Adet - Unknown rider. |
After Bugno came through, there was this poor guy. I have no idea who he was, but he was pretty desperate to get back onto someone's wheel - his face says it all. |
Pla D'Adet - Autobus. |
And here's the rest of the field - well over 80 in the bus! |
Pla D'Adet - Autobus |
More of the bus. Is that Banesto rider Prudencio Indurain? I couldn't see a frame number to identify him. |
Pla D'Adet - Autobus |
More from the bus. Jean-Claude Colotti on the far right seems OK, while the guy in the middle seems to have started praying heavily. Can't tell what the Lotto rider is thinking; there are those tri-color stripes of Dudu, hiding on me again! |
Pla D'Adet - Back of the bus. |
There he is - Cranky Frankie! Frankie Andreu hanging in there, chain across the cassette, working it to the very end as he always did. |
Andy Hampsten - TT Warmup |
Hampsten rolling back to the start after his warmup. Check out those Scott bars, and the non-aero lid (for riding around town, only, I'm sure). |
Robert Millar - TT Start |
Millar rolls off. |
Stephen Roche - TT Start. |
Stephen Roche, 1987 Winner of Le Tour, starting his final Individual Time Trial. He would finish this tour in 13th overall - his last Tour de France. |
Miguel Indurain - ITT Start. |
Indurain, under the eyes of everyone, starts the time trial. This would not be his day, however. Tony Rominger would win the time trial, becoming the first rider to unseat Indurain in an ITT since 1990. Indurain still would win the Tour, his third in a row. |
Miguel Indurain - Post Race, 1993. |
This was pure luck. I was looking at the Banesto Team Bikes as the mechanics worked on them following the days time trial, and the car carrying Miguel just rolled up to the hotel, right next to me. This is taken without a zoom - I just got lucky.
Miguel was very quiet as he got out of the car; you can see the photographers in the background - people came running from all sides, but he just quietly walked past everyone...into the hotel for a shower and dinner like every other rider. |

Phil Anderson and Lance Armstrong. |
As part of our tour, we had a chance to have a group sit-down with Lance and Phil before the final day in Paris. Lance had won the stage to Verdun (his first), and then abandoned on stage 10 per the plan since this was his first Tour. Anderson was riding what would be his final Tour, I believe. |
Lance Armstrong, 1993. |
The man who would win 7 tours, at age 22. |
Lance Armstrong, 1993. |
I forgot who the woman was, but she jumped in. Lance thought it was funny, I was just happy to get the metering right on this one. |
Lance Armstrong, Chips and Salsa. |
This was our gift to Lance for meeting with us. He tore into the bag like he hadn't eaten in weeks! |
Banesto Team Van - Spares, anyone? |
This is what you carry when you have 9 guys racing for 21 days. I love the woman in front going, "I'll take one of the Campy discs, please?" |
Victory Promenade - Champs-Elysees, 1993. |
After the awards ceremony following the final stage, all the surviving members of each team ride a promenade lap of the Champs-Elysees. We got lucky; Indurain looked right at us when we yelled to him! That's Jean-Francois Bernard to Indurain's right. |
